Growth plates, also called the epiphyseal plate or physis, are the areas of growing cartilaginous tissue found at the ends of the long bones in children. Any injury that can cause a sprain in an adult can cause a growth plate fracture in a child. Left untreated, the fracture may heal improperly resulting in an abnormal shape of the limb.
